Free Abdel Kareem Nabil!

Abdel Kareem Nabil is a prominent Egyptian blogger that was sentenced to 4 years in prison for ‘inciting hatred against Islam’ and having the shear audacity to criticise Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Abdel Kareem Nabil is 22 years old.
I personally think this is hideous and a disgrace to the nation of Egypt itself. Maybe even Africa (and from what I hear there is a good few disgraces over there). I’m confident that my blog will probably leave me at the top of yet another government list (with an asterix beside my name) but I doubt hope pray I’ll never see the inside of a jail.
Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t this violate Abdel’s right to freedom of expression? Or are blogs not covered by such ‘rights’? Regardless, in today’s day and age this should not be happening. Clear cut harassment. Shame on any nation that continues to align itself with Egypt.
In order to get a taste of how inflammatory he may have been I visited Abdel’s blog…. Unfortunately I don’t understand a syllable of Arabic (or whatever language he wrote in) so all I could take from it was his description of himself, which goes a little something like this:
I am down to earth Law student; I look forward to help humanity against all form of discriminations. I am currently studying Law in Al Azhar University. I am looking forward to open up my own human rights activists Law firm, which will include other lawyers who share the same views. Our main goal is to defend the rights of Muslim and Arabic women against all form of discrimination and to stop violent crimes committed on a daily basis in these countries.
Sounds like a reasonable chap to me. And even if he didn’t, even if he sounded as messed up as Jean-Marie Le Pen, he shouldn’t be sharing a shower with murders and rapists simply because his thoughts are not inline with the thoughts of Mubarak.
Wonder what Boutros Boutros-Ghali thinks of all this…

My heart goes out to Abdul Kareem. Not only is he facing four years in jail (for voicing his opinion) but his family have also publicly disowned him. I can only imagine how utterly alone and disempowered he must be feeling right now.
In addition I find it sad that the did he/didn’t he saga/fiasco/blog regarding O’Neil has provoked in total 18 responses, whereas this piece has thus far provoked none. We clearly have our priorities straight.
May God help and give you strength Kareem.

قلوبنا مع عبد الكريم نبيل ضحية الطغيان
So sad. I have signed the petition. I am haunted by Kareem’s photo and the beautiful soul revealed just in his blog profile with his ideals on helping women obtain rights.
